a. Zeus sends Odysseus to Scheria, the land of
Phaeacians on a raft. Why is Zeus doing this?
b. (5.33-48) Considering the power of Zeus to send Odysseus to Scheria, why do you think Zeus does not send Odysseus straight to Ithaca? (Hint: Try to relate your answer to what Odysseys needs to gain from Scheria).

a. Zeus sends Odysseus to Scheria on a "lashed, makeshift raft and wrung with pains"(5.37). because Odysseus needs to get the most help from the people of Scheria not the gods or else he will believe that the gods can fix any problem for him instantly.
ReplyDeleteb.Zeus does not send Odysseus straight to Ithaca because Odysseus needs things from the people of Scheria. Odysseus is going to get "bronze and hoards of gold and robes--more plunder than he could ever have won from Troy" (5.42-43). Along with this hoard he will get his dignity back. Over the course of trying to return back to Ithaca Odysseus has lost all of his crew and has become very depressed. By being treated and showered with gifts like a king should be, he will regain his dignity and his confidence so he can lead Ithaca when he returns.
a.) Zeus is sending Odysseus to Scheria because the Phaeacians in Scheria , who are "close kin to the gods themselves, who with all their hearts will prize him like a god" (5.39-40) will send him his own ship and riches to sail home himself.
ReplyDeleteb.) Zeus doesn't want to send Odysseus straight back to Ithica because he wants to give back to Odysseus for suffering so much and without any payment. Instead Zeus sends him to Scheria where the Phaeacians will give him his own ship and a hoard of gold and robes which contained more rewards than he would have gotten at Troy.
