Analyze 5.131-160. Why would gods be against
goddesses mating with mortals? How is this a double-standard? What does this
passage say about the role of women, even goddesses? Use the words of the quotation to back up your response!
The gods would be against godesses mating with mortals because it would be the godess giving birth to the baby. Male gods have sex with mortals all the time. They are used just to have babies and take care of the babies.
I agree with Joey. The gods have affairs with mortals continuously, while goddesses would have consequences. This demonstrates double standard because they are restricted from gender.
The gods don't want their women mating with mortals because they are jealous of the mortals."You unrivaled lords of jealousy..." (5.131). Its a double standard because the gods are always having affairs with mortals with no consequences from the goddesses(except maybe Hera). Even as immortal, all powerful beings, goddesses are still restricted by their gender.
This is a double standard because while Gods are against goddesses mating with mortal men it is acceptable for gods to mate with mortal women. Gods do not want women to mate with mortals because if a mortal man mates with a goddess, the man may feel equal to or superior to the gods. This same reasoning is not the same for gods and mortals because, in Ancient Greece, if a God would mate with a mortal woman, the woman would still never rival the Gods.
This shows that women in Greek culture were always the masters of the men, even if the woman was a goddess. In Greek culture men could have multiple women, but a woman could only have one man.
Ben, you make a good point by saying that men are always the masters of women. In addition, the female Gods do not procreate with mortals because they do not have the power to disrespect the men.
Peter, another reason might be that if a male god gets a mortal female pregnant he can just leave without responsibility, but if a female god gets pregnant she has to take care of it for a few months at least.
The gods do not like when the goddesses sleep with mortals because they consider themselves above them. Back in the time when "Odysseus" was written, women were considered to be less than men. Men and gods both can sleep with whomever they want, yet women and even goddesses cannot mate with any men. This is extremely hypocritical for the men to do. Calypso finally called the gods out on this when they were angry at her for sleeping with Odysseus. She exclaimed, "Yo unrivaled lords of jealousy-- scandalized when goddesses sleep with mortals, openly, even when one has made the man her husband" (131-134).
The gods would be against goddesses mating with mortals because they are the "unrivaled lords of jealousy" (5.131). The gods are jealous that instead of picking powerful god such as themselves, the goddess has instead chosen to sleep with a mortal (and make babies). This forms a double standard, because while the male gods mate with mortals all the time, if a goddess mates with a mortal man, it is considered horrific. This passage is showing that woman do not have as much power in Greek society, because they are not allowed the same freedoms as men.
The gods are against mortal man mating with the gods women because the goddesses belong to the gods not man. Therefore if they were to mate they would be giving themselves to a mortal man. And giving the mortal man power and the child that would be born would have protection and possible powers from the gods. And Zeus would be unhappy because man would be given power.
This is a double standard because when a goddess mates with a mortal then they create a baby then the gods become jealous and cant satisfy their women.
The gods are against goddesses mating with the mortals because a woman cannot be above a man but the immortals are above the mortals so, because Calypso is a woman and immortal, the gods frown upon it. This is a double standard because it is basically saying that the gods can be with mortals but the goddesses can't. This passage states that women are the lowest of all human-like things. "You unrivaled lords of jealousy-scandalized when goddesses sleep with mortals," (5.131-132)
I agree with Joey because even though goddesses have powers and such they are still put down and categorized with all the normal women and expected to do all the work when raising the child.
Women in society are considered slave-like so males feel like they do not want their "property" to be mating with someone else for both mortals and gods. On the other hand, men can mate with others because they are more powerful. Calypso angrily states how men can mate with many people but the gods ". . . train your spite on me for keeping a mortal man beside me" (5.43-44). Calypso recognized the hypocrisy that men can mate with others but women can't.
I agree with Joey but I still think its double standard is because this is just another limit women have just like with Penelope and Antigone. Men have all the power and can make bad decisions and people will just think its okay while if women do something bad they are seen down upon.
Gods are against goddesses mating with mortals because gods like to be above goddesses and having both gods and goddesses be able to mate with mortals would make them equal to each other. The gods can leave their mortals behind but goddesses have to raise the child. The gods have created this double-standard because they can mate with mortals but they will not allow goddesses to do the same. When Calypso states how the gods responded to a goddess having an affair with a mortal, ¨you gods in your everlasting ease were horrified,¨ (5.135). This passage proves how women were not seen as equals even as goddesses because gods have created double-standards against goddesses.
Even though gods can mate with mortals its unacceptable for goddess to mate with mortals because the gods may end up jealous with the mortals for mating with the goddess.

Gods would be against this because of the way the goddess is spending to much time with Odysseus.

DeleteI like this thought of women belonging to the gods and the lack of free will in "giving".
